iconic Blackpool tower – the English version of the Eiffel tower

Blackpool – Britian’s premier seaside resort. From its heydays as THE place to go for a beach holidays in the early 1900′s, the crowds had decreased substantially, and so has its power of attraction .Infamous for its legions of chavy visitors (la-la,trailer trash), this seaside fun-land has so much potential that is unfortunately wasted. It reminds me of a run down, poor version of Genting – I know, how can it be a poor-er version of Genting, like as if Genting is not bad enough!

The English opinion of Blackpool is split in two – one faction absolutely love it for its wide variety of clubs all in close proximity and the other absolutely hate it for its association with less-than-savoury perma-tan characters. And the Malaysian is extremely dissapointed at the complete mess that is Blackpool. There is so much potential with it being right on the coast, ferris wheels everywhere and huge screaming roller coasters. Amusement arcades (think run-down Vegas) are rife. This could have been an extremely pleasant place to be put on the map for all to visit…..

1) Unless you want to eat kebabs, fish & chips, pizza or burgers, there is NO OTHER FOOD. It is junk food galore, and I was unable to find a nice seafood restaurant that serves fresh fish, prawns ect. There was one posh-looking one, but it was just basically a fish&chip shop all dressed up. BLEAH. -20 points for being foodless!!!

In the end, I settled for this classically english lunch – the green thing on the side tastes suspiciously like old mulched grass and is called mushy peas (normal green peas pureed) for those of you fortunate enough to not have encountered it before. I was so hungry I even ate that.

2) The ‘attractions’ repeats itself. Every 3rd door is a club/disco which is closed down, every second door is a casino-wannabe and every other nook and cranny is filled with stalls selling tacky souvenier/cotton candy/kebab.

3) WHAT BEACH? Seeing that is is named Britian’s premier seaside resort, there are no beaches at all – it is all construction site sand

Semi-beachlike 2 miles down

4) Every other person is perma-tanned or bright pink from sun exposure (sorry, no pictures here, I was afraid for my life:))

However, I did like the slow trams that trawl up and down the Blackpool promenande. It is such typically holiday seaside town..with most of the trams finished with wood just like the olden days.

( did I forget to mention there are also shitloads of above-60 on holiday in Blackpool?)

Pleasure beach was not pleasurable.

I did like the streetlamps, with sealife themes attached to it.

Wiki tells me that Blackpool is in a middle of a £500mil regeneration programme, which probably explains the construction sand passing off as part of the beach. For my part, I was glad that I did not stay the night as we originally planned, I would not be able to have junk food for both lunch and dinner.

Was reading the English papers online last night and the headlines says that UK is having a heatwave at 27′ and ppl are out sunning etc. BF and I started laughing ~ we consider it CHILLY at 23′!

The weather was one of the chief reasons to my not moving to UK when given the option (it was either UK or Australia) a coupla yrs back. I like my sun. Long dark winter days tend to depress me. And being your typical Asian – I like fresh food too. However one tends to adapt in circumstances now innit? Its always interesting to read about anothers adventure. :-)

mirebella: 23 was actually suprisingly hot seeing that the sun was extremely bright + it is early spring!

After encountering 9 degrees summers in december whilst at Australia, I had kinda lost hope in Melbourne’s see sawing tempretures!!It went from 30 deg to 9 all in a day! Amazing

natnatniv: I know – this is why I always try to go for grilled fish if they have any.I think its because its not very fresh, therefore they always fry i
